One name really stands out as we look back at Singapore's rich history of food. Kaya, a sweet coconut jam, has easily become synonymous with the traditional Singaporean breakfast. The iconic trio of Kaya toast, soft boiled eggs and kopi is a staple at any coffeeshop you walk in to.

What is Kaya?

Kaya is a sweet coconut jam that is well-loved throughout Southeast Asia. Its main ingredients include eggs, pandan leaves, coconut milk/cream and sugar.

Traditionally, there are two main types of Kaya - the Hainanese Kaya and Nyonya Kaya. Today, many kopitiams have created their own variations of traditional Kaya, such as gula melaka or chocolate.

Amazing Kaya Inventions

In Singapore, we've enjoyed our favourite Kaya toast as a breakfast staple. However, many have recently discovered new ways to combine the classic product with modern recipes. These include Kaya Pau, Kaya Ice Cream, Kaya Macarons, Kaya Pocky, and more!

Of course, making Kaya is no easy feat. A lot of hard work and love goes into the process of making this delicious coconut jam. Back in the days, Ah Gong used to spend 3 to 4 hours each day hand-mixing this Kaya!

We hope to share the joy of Kaya's heritage with everyone, and together we can keep passing the Kaya torch down for generations to come!
